1. DUE DATE for the comic is July 25th. Do not take this date lightly.

2. EVERYONE needs to submit a cover. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Due date for the cover is August 1st. As a group we will be voting for a cover to be used for the final print on August 2nd. If you are confused about the last cover, Aleth's octopus/girl cover was special just for the preview. The final cover needs to be a little more thought out and representative of who we are as a group.... etc, etc. Also, please consider the spine and back cover. It would be nice if we had one continuous image that wrapped around to the back. AGAIN, DO NOT TAKE MY THREATS LIGHTLY. If you do not submit a cover, I will call, email, text, im, facebook you every day until you do.

3. The next meeting will be at the end of July. Date and time TBA soon. There should be no excuses not to attend this meeting unless you are sick, out of the state, have serious family business, or working. Otherwise, feel my wrath... some more.

This meeting is especially important to those of you who have not attended any meetings.

At the next meeting we will be discussing printing options, distribution, and promotion.

My biggest fix besides cleanup is more perspective on the letters, sorta coming more rightward too, for a better layout.

The un-drawn hand will get its liney-poos, I just stuck it in there for placement. And I'm putting in a rough black border.

Also, the copy: "Coming This Fall..." – That gives us until December 21st. The website will be on there too, probably following Fake Heads. To www. or not to www.?

Apples & Oranges

I changed my idea but its still about food. A family of Apples live next to a family of Oranges. A tree is in the Oranges' lawn but drops its fruit on to the Apples' lawn. After Mrs. Apple bakes a pie with the fruit, Mr. Orange and Mr. Apple get into a big fight over who the fruit belongs to.

It's not much, but I'm excited to do the rest now that I've got a first panel. The character finds a nut (machine nut from a bolt) on the ground and thinks for a few panels what it could have been from and puts it down. that is all. I think I'm just going to stick with drawing something rather than cut it out because I don't do much drawing.

This is what I meant by plushie head octopus on the girl's head... so, she's wearing something like this instead of her helmet. Obviously, you draw it so it's way more plushier/octopus-ier/better drawn. I rotated it so yall don't have to rotate your head 180.

ps. I liked what Isam said about the octopus fighting a "fake head"! yay for collaboration!

Preview Cover Ideas

These are a couple of my thoughts on the Preview Version's cover. The first one is based on Isam's idea - maybe less sexy and more "fake heads"?

Regarding the Preview Cover: It would be awesome if everyone could post a thumbnail or two. We are a big group, we have the opportunity to make this a collaborative piece. For example, one person can thumbnail a design, and someone else can do the finished illustration. Or we could combine multiple ideas into one (like I tried with Isam's), and choose someone to execute it.

Let's have a brainstorming session via blog! Everyone post something.

Everyone's stuff looks awesome!!

Here's a quick photo collage that is probably sorta close to what the final look will be. I want to play with how to make the faces a lot more.

The comic is represented by a series of recipe cards with a line of text lifted straight from a recipe. "Chop a clove of garlic." for example. Each panel will illustrate its part of the recipe with veggies and other ingredients acting out the directions in an abstracted way. A tomato slicing a clove of garlic with a big axe for example. The setting will be a sort of vague battle field with a lot of smoke and stuff. Everyone dies by the end and all the ingredients lay dead in a big pile. In the last panel they are revealed to be a delicious veggie lasagna.

I'm not sure which direction I'm going with this yet. It's definitely going to be this on-edge looking old man I've been drawing a lot of lately. It's probably going to have something to do with either pirates or longshorman. And some fighting. It may also have to do with a bitter and confused child counterpart, maybe some kind of storytelling, like the old man is pulling the child into his delusional fantasies of fighting pirates. Not sure though. Mostly I just want to see awkward human interaction with this guy and others. Maybe even make him cry. More to follow.

hey guys. don't think i'm going to be making it to the meeting. Buuuut to show that i'm alive this is what i've got so far. The idea so far is off the idea of reapers and death dieties.

The world is perpetuated by Odin (big burly rag guy). He brings night to the world and when he leaves it becomes day. To sustain himself he has harvesters, Lyn (the crow mask red riding hood) going all over the world and collecting peoples souls, which will be represented in "berries" that appear as people pass. So my story has to do with Lyn, doing her duty for Odin, "harvesting". While doing so she comes to a crossroads, where she experiences something she doesn't understand, and makes a choice on either sticking to her duty or making a choice of her own.

Anyways the story needs some work, but that is the jist. Let me know what you think!

Sanchez: The Comic

My idea consists of Sanchez and his slice-of-life interactions with other people. Basically, he's the only anthropomorphic being in an otherwise completely normal world. He has a beaver tail and wears women's boots. His belly button's an outie and he apparently has no visible genitalia despite his nudity. Go figure. By contrast, I plan on drawing every human more realistic in features and anatomy.

Sanchez is a cynic by nature. He's selfish, and annoyed for the most part by people and their reactions to him. Most of the time, no one thinks he's even real. He's either thought to be a hallucination, some sort of talking doll, or a prank pulled by a television show. In any case, he isn't shy. He says whatever's on his mind, no matter how rude or distasteful it might be.

My comic will be short and simple. I expect it to be about 2 to 3 pages long. Each page consisting of a different event of Sanchez's day. It begins once Sanchez's handheld game breaks down. Angry, he goes to a local game shop to get it fixed. I have ideas as to what happens next but I still want to flesh them out more before I post them.

So I've been thinking about my comic and I've decided to make it about a boy who's really dumb. He walked into walls and can't count to three. He's really nice though and feeds cats and gives flowers to little girls. One day a bird comes by one day and tells him that he can go to a demon/creature thingy to exchange his heart for a brain.

hai gais, this is a bit of progress for my film, theres still a long way to go as i'm still learning the 3d buisness, my main obstacle will be the modelling part, please note that it'll probably not look as "shaded" as it does here, i wanted to instead paint on the texturing and lighting by hand to give it a coarser look.

these eyes are also just for demonstration sake, in the final version they'll be painted on, here they're actuall spheres.

i'm not looking forward to having to model the hands...

The other kids sneer and whisper and stare her down. She walks into the bathroom where she is cornered by bullies. They grab her and take off her mask, at which point she will smile and blind them with her braces.

-they walk into the kitchen, there is a man in a suit laying on the floor, puddle of blood under him, his head is half bashed in.
-cut to both them shoveling dirt into a hole in the middle of the woods (dead man's pov)

So mines about this mysterious new girl in school. Its starts off with everyone gossiping about the rumors they've heard about her (she ate her parents, is in charge of the triad, etc.) and transitions to her walking the halls. Walking through all her peers, she reaches a road block. That being the mountain, barely passing as a student, the school bully, who procedes to test this new girl. It starts with a swift knocking of her books, which countered with a punch to the groin. Not pleased by the this result, the bully picks up the girl throwing her into the lockers and then crumples it around her. Thinking it is over, the lockers start moving, and it seems that the girl has transformed the crumpled metal into a giant locker monster. With this new form, she grabs the bully and flings him out of the school.

*Oh and this will done in EVERY MEDIUM POSSIBLE!! you know pencils, paper and good ol' After Effects (Flash will be considered)

A family of fleas is chilling on the back of a dog. In close-up this looks like a forest of giant hairs. The Dad flea has a suitcase and a camera. The Mom flea has a purse and a brochure. The Kid flea is wearing Mickey Mouse ears and is jumping up and down excitedly. The Mom opens up the brochure. It reads “Tropical Vacations” and has a picture of a beach and a palm tree on it. The Dad checks his watch. A taxi pulls up and the family gets inside. They drive off the dog and arrive at a tiny airport. They board a plane and fly through the air. They fly over a zoo and land in front of a barred cage. They leave the airplane and enter the cage. We see them lounging in a forest of hairs similar to the dog’s but a different color. The Mom is on a beach towel in a bikini sipping a tropical drink. The Dad is taking photos. The Kid is still jumping up and down. The camera begins to pull out and fades to a cage with two monkeys in it. Both are seated on a branch not facing each other. One monkey parts the fur of the other monkey and starts picking out the fleas and eating them one by one. There may or may not be tiny screams. The monkey eating the fleas may or may not have a snarky grin on his face.

The medium will be fake stop-motion like my thesis. I’ll model the fleas and monkeys in clay then take photos of them and animate everything in AfterEffects.

"Something you lost will soon turn up"

Okay...so...this might be stupid...it might be not. But let me know what y'all think. So it begins with the teenage girl character lounging in her bed holding a picture of her boyfriend in a heart frame. She holds the picture tightly and sighs. She picks up her phone next to her and dials. A boy's voice answers. The girl says "last night was so amazing..I am so....the rest of her sentence gets cut off as she hears a knock on her door. She gets up to open it. She looks straight ahead and sees no one, as she is about to close the door she looks down and sees a little girl wearing all pink. (The personification of Virginity) The little girl looks all cute and innocent at first. The teenager bends down to talk to her. All of a sudden the little girl gets angry, pulls out a large bat and strikes the teen straight across the face until she hits the floor appearing lifeless. The scene ends.

I wanted mine to be short and straight to the point. I don't know if it works or not. So please let me know. Coming up with initial stories are not my forte. Also..I want to do this in Flash.

So mine's about a boy who gets kicked out of the house by his father, and he's not allowed to come back until he gets the mail. So his father abuses him from the porch, throwing stuff at him until he reaches the mailbox. Seeing the mailbox, he opens it up, and mail comes crashing down at his feet.

A chicken and a lizard fall out too. But an envelope hits in him the face. He catches that in his hands. You hear the sound of an ice cream truck and he looks over at it longingly. Ripping open the envelope, its a letter addressed to the owner of the house and it says, "Congratulations, you've won 45 million dollars!" Or some awesome amount.

And the father yells at him from the porch and throws a lawn gnome at him. I'm not sure if the boy gets angry or sad, but he eats the letter, picks up the rest of the mail, and goes back home.

Also, his name is Johann.

Aren't you guys jumping for joy?!!!! School is almost back in session. Just 1 more week. Well....actually....more like 6 days. I am so bummed. I only got to enjoy a couple of weeks of my vacation because I am an RA. I didn't leaave until Dec 17th and had to be back since Jan 2nd. Talk about a bummer. >.<. Haha, I was thinking that you guys could come over and animate. But then I realized, that knowing us, we could only animate for so long without getting fidgety and there's nothing to do where I live except go to the library (nice library full of books and DVDs tho), Barnes & Noble, the mall, or the movies.

I....dunno, yos. :/ But I do have two computers, and I know Maya, I, and Kat have laptops if we wanted to work on the computer. And everyone has their own lightbox. Meh. I dunno. Nooo clue. I figure it'd be a change of atmosphere. And I know Kat's been dying to come to my place.

But like, I just don't know what we'd do. I'm not too keen on you guys coming over. But I really want to animate over the break, and I animate best with people. Is there anywhere else we can animate?

it seems we've all been talking about dropping this project and as far as I know it is unanimous now. I’m actually sort of glad about this(albeit disappointed in my self and in you guys, way to go people!), the truth is that none of us was really entirely happy with what came out of the story phase and it is better that we didn’t put all our effort into finishing something that none of us would end up liking, the good news is that we have all also agreed that fake heads will still exist(as far as I know, correct me if you do not).

we still have about one and a half of a week to meet up and plan something else, im guessing that’s enough time for us meeting once more, but not enough to have anything better than last time. which took us two meetings to plan. what i do think we can plan is the way in which we ought to work in the future.

I personally don't believe the anthology form works well for us(but hey, that’s me). I want to suggest instead a system that involves each one of us in a different "specialty area" i.e. concept art, script, character design, backgrounds, etc etc. now, everyone will be involved in each of this areas giving a direction to the whole thing, but in the end it will be the job of one to make each part follow a given direction to benefit the main concept, kind of like an art director. there could be areas that are not constrained to just one person, namely script and animation, there’s is no reason why we cant all work in these areas together, but there will be a pre-established style that someone will have come up with, with the help of everybody else. this is just a suggestion anyway. we could conceivably still work in anthology for if no one likes this idea or finds it unpractical.

I just wanted to keep you guys notified. I e-mailed Kat and told her I don't thing I can do this project cause there have been a lot of complications at home. There has been a death in the family and a lot of family issues going on. I send my deepest regret and apologize for dumping this on last minute. I had not intended to stiff you guys but things are really hectic for me right now and I don't think I can handle my job, dealing with things at home, and doing this at the same time. I suggested if anyone wants to wait until August (when I am back on campus) I would be more than happy to meet up with you guys and handle the project from there. But as of now....I am going to have to back down. =(

I finally managed to draw some quick-and-dirty storyboards, a mere twenty minutes before the deadline. They're not as cool as Isam's, but they get the job done.

Quick description because I didn't write on the boards themselves: the old man walks through his home (camera pans west), and he sees the book. After looking to see if there's anyone around to disturb him, he grins toothlessly to the audience and runs to an armchair with the novel (the running is not shown because I got a little stuck with how I wanted to compose the shot, but I'll figure it out soon). Cut to a close shot of the old man clutching the book in his trembling hands, and just as he is about to read, a hand claps his shoulder. Camera pans north to reveal Death standing over the old man. Death indicates it's time to go, and the old man weakly protests. Death considers, then says no. The old man hangs his head in disappoinment. That may or may not be the end, I don't want to over extend myself because I'm easily discouraged.

The Story as I Know It

This post is mainly for Jessica's benefit, but feel free to read it and remind yourself how this story is going down. Or at least how I think this story is going down.

Each animator gets one scene in the life of this pathetic individual. The recurring theme/gag for all the scenes is the character (male with emo glasses) keeps trying to read this book throughout his life, but is interrupted. The transitions between the scenes all correspond somehow (i.e. a screaming mouth at the end of Maya's scene becomes a dark hallway in the beginning of Isam's scene). Jess, because your scene comes after Jen's and before mine, it is important that you communicate with us both (preferably by blog) so that we can coordinate our transitions.

Isam, please post the character sketches you drew at our meeting last Tuesday to help Jess decide how she will design the adult version.

1) Draw final storyboards. You should know approximately how many shots your scene will have, and the layout for each should be more or less fleshed out. Post them on the blog when you're done.
2) Finalize your character design(s).

Jess: there was some rearranging in the last meeting, so now you've been assigned to adulthood. If you desperately wanted to do the character's teenage years, you can work it out with Jen.

Alright, my fellow fake heads, listen up: a small faction of us have arbitrarily decided the theme for the main character's "mind trip" will be STAGES OF HIS LIFE. Maya has birth, Isam won childhood, Jen settled for adulthood, and I snatched up death before there could be any argument.

JESSICA, CANDICE, what's the word? Are you interested in participating in this project? If so, you can choose any life stage in between (i.e. adolescence, early vs late adulthood). And if you're feeling discouraged because you can't make it to the meetings, please don't be. We have ways of filling you in and giving you an equal share in the decision making - you just have to really want to do it. The more the merrier, right gang?

Assignments for all those meeting at the library on Tuesday:
1) Storyboards for individual scenes (keep it simple)
2) Character designs (doesn't have to be anything solid, vague ideas are a-okay)
